Spermiogenesis deficiency and germ-cell apoptosis in CREM-mutant mice
-
Nantel F, Monaco L, Foulkes NS, Masquillier D, LeMeur M, Henriksen K, Dierich A, Parvinen M, Sassone-Corsi P: Spermiogenesis deficiency and germ-cell apoptosis In CREM-mutant mice. Nature 1996, 380:159-162. This paper and the one by Blendy et al. (Nature 1996, 380:162-165) analyze the specific role of CREM in spermatogenesis by the use of CREM-mutant mice generated by homologous recombination. The lack of all the CREM isoforms causes an important reduction in size and weight of the testis and a dramatic decline in postmeiotic gene expression. The authors suggest that the complete lack of spermatoza in mutant mice is reminiscent of cases of human infertility.

Adaptive Inducibility of CREM as transcriptional memory of circadian rhythms
-
Foulkes NS, Duval G, Sassone-Corsi-P: Adaptive Inducibility of CREM as transcriptional memory of circadian rhythms. Nature 1996, 381:83-85. This paper shows that CREM is able to adapt to changes in photoperiod by modifying its mode of induction in response to adrenergic stimuli. For the first time the original observations of a differential sensitivity to β-adrenergic stimulation in the pineal gland are linked to mechanisms regulating gene expression in the nucleus.

-
Baler R, Klein DC: Circadian expression of transcription factor Fra-2 in the rat pineal gland. J Biol Chem 1995, 270:27319-27325. The authors analyze the expression of Fos-related proteins in the rat pineal gland and describe the circadian regulation of Fra-2.
