    • Since Eq. (13) has been obtained as a level-lowering factor for a 1s electron, estimate of an effective radius by (14) would introduce a considerable error, except for the cases with a K-shell electron (j = Z, Z-1). As we shall see below m Figs. 5 and 6, those cases that cannot accurately be described by (13) would occur only with such high-Z atoms as N, O, and F in liquid-metallic hydrogen at lower densities; these cases are of no practical interest, however, since expected pycnonuclear reactions are quite sluggish there.

    • THe screened Coulomb-coupling parameters defined in (29) stem from the short-range Coulombic repulsion (A5) that goes into the calculations of the contact probabilities in Eq. (21). Those thus differ from the thermodynamic Coulomb-coupling parameters given by Eq. (11), which had been derived through the thermodynamic variational calculations in Ref 7.
