    • There are many different examinations of joint ventures and their motivating rationale. For example, K. Harrigan in her 1985 book (Strategies for Joint Ventures, Lexington, Mass. Lexington Books) and later her writing in the Strategic Management Journal (1988, Joint ventures and competitive strategy. 9(2): 141-158) provides excellent insight. Similarly, Kogut's 1988 article in the Strategic Management Journal (Joint ventures: Theoretical and empirical perspective, 9:319-332) and F. J. Contractor and P. Lorange's article in the book they edited Cooperative Strategy in International Business (1988, Lexington Mass., Lexington Books) also provide useful insight. However, while these various writings use different terms they all indicate that while economic motives may still predominate there are other motives that may be as strong including knowledge acquisition.
