    • This efficiency is essentially given by the optical excitation efficiency, which for metastable helium can be almost 100% (see Ekstrom C R, Kurtsiefer Ch, Voigt D, Dross O, Pfau T and Mlynek J 1996 Opt. Commun. 123 505) and the collection efficiency which can be of the order of 10% if the appropriate optics are chosen.
