What Canada's Indians Want and the Difficulties of Getting It
-

See Del Riley, "What Canada's Indians Want and the Difficulties of Getting It," in Leroy Little Bear, Menno Boldt, J. Anthony Long, eds., Pathways to Self-Determination: Canadian Indians and the Canadian State (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1984), p. 160, where he says: "Indian people asked, ... Why should we get involved in the constitutional discussions? Getting involved meant we had to deal with the Canadian government largely on its own terms. After all, we are nations. Why should we stoop to ask the federal government for rights to which we have an inherent historical claim? But then again, would we have done the right thing for our people by staying away from the discussions?"

Some of these suggestions are contained as recommendations in the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Restructuring and in Volume 3. Gathering Strength. These ideas are but a few of a large number of possible initiatives that have been suggested from time to time. One such initiative, announced on 9 December 1996 by the prime minister and the minister of Indian affairs and northern development, is the recent partnership among the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and its financial arm, the Saskatchewan Indian Equity Foundation, and the Toronto-Dominion Bank to establish the First Nations Bank of Canada as a chartered bank.
