    • Although to our knowledge no observations of it have been reported, the [formula omitted] state arising from the [formula omitted] electron configuration certainly exists and should be metastable. The corresponding [formula omitted] and [formula omitted] states are approximately 18 000 and [formula omitted] below their respective doublets so we expect the [formula omitted] state to lie roughly [formula omitted] below the [formula omitted] state. Except for the ground ionic state, all the states below the [formula omitted] level have even parity and, therefore, can only radiate to the ground state via an electric dipole transition. Since the [formula omitted] state itself is metastable, it is reasonable to conclude that the unseen [formula omitted] state is also metastable.

    • Closer examination of the data in Fig. 7 will reveal that the scaling of [formula omitted] with electron density is actually greater than [formula omitted] particularly at the higher pressure. The most likely explanation for such deviation is an increase in [formula omitted] with rf power. Thus, the formation rate coefficients will increase along with the electron density and the overall scaling will exceed the [formula omitted] dependence expected for a 2-step process. It is conceivable that some 3-step processes may also play a role in forming the metastable ion states.

    • The neutral metastable density can also be significant. Using a small resonance lamp, we measure absorption by the [formula omitted] metastable state at 696.5 nm and estimate the line-averaged density to be [formula omitted]
