    • Phosphinite synthesis: To a well-stirred solution of the alkaloid (6.38 g, 0.02 mol) in dry degassed tetrahydrofuran (50 ml) under nitrogen, was introduced butyllithium (13.3 ml of 1.5 M solution in hexane, 0.02 mol), followed by the slow introduction of chlorodiphenylphosphine (4.41 g, 0.02 ml; freshly distilled and stored under nitrogen). After 15 min stirring at room temperature, the solvents were evaporated and the crude product was obtained quantitatively (with one equivalent of lithium chloride) as a white or yellow powder.
