    • This is essentially the phenomenon known as Landau damping in plasma physics. Where it is possible to take the limit of a continuous smooth distribution of frequencies (Formula presented)|(Formula presented)(Formula presented)→∫dωd(ω), the degree of damping exhibited depends on the structure of the distribution d(ω), with greater damping exhibited for distributions over a broad range of ω. See, e.g., D. E. Baldwin and G. Rowlands, Phys. Fluids 9, 2444 (1966).
