1. Clifford Stoll points out in chapter 11 of Silicon Snake Oil (New York: Anchor Books, 1995) that, so far, few of these treasures have actually made it to the Internet.
2. We need to distinguish between the sprawling array of information that is available without cost and those resources that arrive over the same highway with a price tag attached. There is no free lunch on the Internet. The best and most reliable information usually requires a "toll" of some kind unless the information is made available because of governmental (read "taxpayer-supported") funding.
