    • The antisymmetric fundamental cannot be excited in dipole scattering on e.g. Ni(100) and Ni(110) and the corresponding loss intensity will be very weak, except in the case of resonant scattering. Dipole scattering, which only occurs when there is a non-vanishing dynamic dipole moment perpendicular to the surface, generally increases the loss intensity in the specular direction with orders of magnitude.
