PRISM III: An updated pediatric risk of mortality score
-
Pollack MM, Patel KM, Ruttimann UE: PRISM III: an updated pediatric •• risk of mortality score. Crit Care Med 1996, 24:743-752. PRISM III was developed using the data on 11,165 patients from 32 pediatric units in the United States. The ability of PRISM III to predict mortality is excellent, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve increased by 3.9% in relation to the predecessor model. The very sophisticated and exhaustive methodology followed for the development of PRISM III is worth reading.

Intensive Care Med 1996, 22:1368-1378. The validity of SAPS II was assessed on 1393 consecutive admissions. Mortality was estimated by the model across 21 pre-selected subgroups of patients. After customization the model presented satisfactory calibration and discrimination. However, mortality was still overestimated in the subgroup of patients with trauma.

Budgeting and cost accounting in European Intensive Care Units: A note
-
Jegers M: Budgeting and cost accounting in European Intensive Care • Units: a note. Financial Accountability and Management 1996, 12:323-334. After extensive financial data on 89 ICUs in 12 European countries was collected (EURICUS-I), it was concluded that a nonsystematic diversity of budgetary procedures existed and that costing procedures were underdeveloped in that nonrepresentative sample of ICUs.

Simplified Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System: The TISS-28 items - Results from a multicenter study
-
Reis Miranda D, De Rijk A, Schaufeli WB: Simplified Therapeutic •• Intervention Scoring System: the TISS-28 items - results from a multicenter study. Intensive Care Med 1996, 24:64-73. After reducing the original TISS from 76 to 28 items, this multicenter study showed that TISS scores correspond to the time nurses spend on nondirect patient care in the ICU.
