11. In fact, this is true only for simple fixed points, for which det(∂V)≠0, which means that in the two-dimensional case the linearized system has two strictly nonzero eigenvalues. The ease of nonsimple fixed points can be much more complicated, and a discussion is beyond the scope of this paper.
