In endorsing an underconsumptionist position, we are rejecting Tugan Baranovsky's “merry-go-round” solution according to which there can never be a realization problem due to low wages since an expanding demand for new and more capital-intensive machinery can always be created. While theoretically correct in terms of the equations of reproduction, this solution neglects the role of subjective forces in defining the ultimate end of the process of production: to produce commodities for human consumption; see, New York: Modern Reader, Chapter X.
