Thank you to the authors of these for permission to circulate pre-publication copies of their contributions. It should be noted that, due to pressures on time, most of these were circulated before authors had revised their pieces in line with suggestions from reviewers and from the Editor. This means that there are some differences between the pieces as they were read by the Spoken Word participants, and as they were finally published in the journal. The circulated pieces were those by Magdalene Ang-Lygate, Joan Chrisler, Ros Edwards, Christine Griffin, Tracey Hurd and Alice McIntyre. Anna Livia. Deborah Marks, and Diana Russell. These were all first published in either Part I (Feminism & Psychology 6[11]) or Part II (Feminism & Psychology 6[2]) of the Special Feature on 'Representing the Other', edited by Sue Wilkinson. They are all reprinted in Sue Wilkinson and Celia Kitzinger (eds) (1996) Representing the Other: A 'Feminism & Psychology' Reader. London: Sage (and this book also includes additional pieces not published here). They are referenced below only with their own title and with that of the Special Feature (or book).

The Northern Initiative on Women and Eating (NIWH) was founded in 1988 in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in response to women asking for support around eating distress. The telephone information and listening service can be contacted on 0191-221 0233. NIWE has also developed group support for women experiencing eating problems, and training sessions for other workers. Its work has been recognized as an example of innovative and significant good practice in working with women by Good Practices in Mental Health (see Caroline Harding and Jan Sherlock, 1994 Women and Mental Health: An Information Pack of Mental Health Services for Women in the UK. London: Good Practices in Mental Health). For further information about the work and/or training, please ring or write to: NIWE. 1 Pink Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5DW, UK.

Ann's comment on reading through the transcript: 'Certainly, one of the aims of NIWE is to challenge the representation of women experiencing eating problems as "sufferers", i.e. women without any kind of agency. The way they are using food is what they happen to be doing at a particular point to communicate what it doesn't feel possible, just yet, to verbalize.'

Jean's comment on reading the transcript: 'I feel uneasy about what I said here, because I can see that the way 1 have expressed it is in itself problematic and that many black feminists would be angry that I didn't challenge them and would see that as a kind of racism. However, in the context of this particular research project, I wanted to know black women's views about a particular campaign which had resulted in a serious split between black and white feminists who had previously been working together.' For further details, see J. Carabine (1992) 'Constructing Women: Women's Sexuality and Social Policy', unpublished PhD thesis. University of Sheffield, UK.
