The laboratory of the Königlichen Museen in Berlin was founded in 1888 and closed in 1943. Friedrich Rathgen, the first director, retired in 1927 and was succeeded by Carl Brittner (1883-1958). In 1975 the Staatlichen Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz founded a new conservation and archaeometry laboratory called the Rathgen- Forschungslabor.
