2. Bislama is a nco-Melanesia pidgin, which is Vanuatus lingua franca. Given the existence of 113 indigenous languages (Tryon 1996)
3. Bislama is an important means of communication for the nations 180,000 inhabitants. It is the language in which all the work of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre is conducted.
4. This was established in part because Australian descendents of ni-Vanuatu who went to Queensland are returning to Vanuatu in increasing numbers in search of relatives.
