    • It should be emphasized that in the present work, energy level locking occurs because the Coulomb potentials that develop in the two conductors due to the charge imbalance induce shifts of the transverse energy levels, bringing pairs of levels together. This differs from the physics described in Ref. [3], where it was suggested that the highest occupied subbands of parallel conductors may depopulate together due to the minimization of the total electronic kinetic energy of the system, in a model that does not include the effects of these Coulomb potentials on the transverse energy levels. We find that such models do not exhibit energy level locking.

    • The Kohn-Sham equations defining the transverse energy levels in our model are effectively one dimensional. This implies [see L. D. Landau, E. M. Lifshitz, and L. P. Pitaevskii, Quantum Mechanics, Non-Relativistic Theory (Pergamon, New York, 1986), 3rd ed., Sec. 21] that exact energy level degeneracies do not occur.
