Dr. D. B. Boyd has kindly pointed out that he (based on EH calculations and not CNDO as stated in this reference) and the author agree that there seems to be no effect from methyl substitutions on the gross charges on sulfur which can be correlated with the ionization potentials of the disulfide moiety. Dr. Boyd has, however, not correlated changes in the S-R overlap populations with these ionization potentials.

Although H- and H+ do not simultaneously exist as free ions, H- was included to compare the efficiencies of the concomitant and the nucleophilic reactions as H- is known to cleave R2S2 in aprotic solvents like DMSO. See
