note
-
I have not been able to find a general reference to the idea that escape from deep wells is always exponential in time, no matter what the shape of the potential energy well. Since escape can be viewed as climbing a large flight of stairs, each of the N steps being a possible state, the problem is isomorphic to alinear matrix equation. Exponential decay then implies that the smallest eigenvalue splits away from the sea of other eigen-values.
