The 1958 crisis broke out on August 23 and ended in October on Kinmen, a small island close to China's Fujian Province but occupied by the Taiwan authorities. The crisis started with heavy artillery bombardment over the island by the People's Liberation Army with the intention of seizing it from Taiwan. The United States immediately dispatched six aircraft carrier battle groups to the area and escorted Taiwanese ships to provide food and ammunition supplies to the Taiwan troops on the island. Later, the Chinese leadership dropped their plan to seize the island and stopped the bombardment.
