28. The vertical cloud size in the interaction region is 15 mm (FWHM). Therefore it is not possible to illuminate all atoms with a pulsed light field of the same intensity. However, using a short gate time of 1 ms in the fluorescence detection allows to select a small fraction of the cloud, which had a vertical size of 2 mm in the interaction region. With a vertical beam waist of 8.2 mm, these atoms are illuminated with light of the same intensity
