Nosocomial pneumonia and mortality among patients in intensive care units
-
Fagon JY, Chastre J, Vuagnat A, Trouillet JL, Novara A, Gibert C: Nosocomial pneumonia and mortality among patients in intensive care units. JAMA 1996, 275:866-869. This well-designed prospective study included 1978 ICU patients of which 328 developed nosocomial pneumonia identified according to strict diagnostic criteria. The main results confirm that, in addition to the severity of illness, nosocomial pneumonia and nosocomial bacteremia independently contribute to ICU patient mortality.

The effect of late-onset ventilator-associated pneumonia in determining patient mortality
-
Kollef MH, Silver P, Murphy DM, Trovillion E: The effect of late-onset ventilator-associated pneumonia in determining patient mortality. Chest 1995, 108:1655-1662. Using a logistic regression model, this prospective study demonstrates that the acquisition of late-onset ventilator-associated pneumonia due to Pseudomonas or Acinetobacter spp is an independent risk factor for mortality in critically ill patients.
