Influences of genes and shared family environment on adult body mass index assessed in an adoption study by a comprehensive path model

-
Borecki IB, Rice T, Pérusse L, Bouchard C, Rao DC: Major gene influence on the propensity to store fat in trunk versus extremity depots: evidence from the Quebec Family Study. Obes Res 1995, 3:1-8. The first paper to show that subcutaneous truncal fat is potentially influenced by a major gene, even when the effects of total body fat are controlled for. The frequency of the gene leading to high values of truncal fat seems to be high (0.35).

Human obesity does not segregate with the chromosomal regions of Prader-Willl, Bardet-Bledl, Cohen, Borjeson or Wilson-Turner syndromes
-
Reed DR, Ding Y, Xu W, Cather C, Price RA: Human obesity does not segregate with the chromosomal regions of Prader-Willl, Bardet-Bledl, Cohen, Borjeson or Wilson-Turner syndromes. Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord 1995, 19:599-603. Several inherited disorders exhibit obesity as a characteristic feature. This paper shows that molecular markers of five of these Mendelian syndromes are not linked to BMI in families with severely obese members who were otherwise clinically normal.

An exploratory investigation of genetic linkage with body composition and fatness phenotypes: The Quebec Family Study
-
Borecki IB, Rice T, Pérusse L, Bouchard C, Rao DC: An exploratory investigation of genetic linkage with body composition and fatness phenotypes: the Quebec Family Study. Obes Res 1994, 2:213-219. Sib-pair linkage studies indicating the presence of fairly strong linkages of markers on 7q33 and 20q13 with weak evidence for other linkages on 13q14 using either BMI, percent body fat, or sum of six skinfolds as phenotypes.

DNA variation in the genes of the Na,K-Adenosine Triphosphatase and its relation with resting metabolic rate, respiratory quotient, and body fat
-
Dériaz O, Dionne FT, Pérusse L, Tremblay A, Vohl MC, Côté G, Bouchard C: DNA variation in the genes of the Na,K-Adenosine Triphosphatase and its relation with resting metabolic rate, respiratory quotient, and body fat. J Clin Invest 1994, 93:838-843. Five markers at three of the Na-K ATPase genes were tested for association and linkage relationships with RMR, RQ, and percent body fat. Percent body fat was associated with a BgIII marker in the α2 gene. RQ was also associated with a marker in the α2 gene and linked with a β gene Mspl marker.
