The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a nationwide household survey conducted each month for the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the Bureau of the Census. The sample currently includes about 50,000 households. The purpose of the survey is to collect information about the demographic characteristics and employment status of the civilian noninstitutional population 16 years old and over. The data collected in March of each year by the CPS undergo additional editing and processing to more clearly identify family and household relationships among individuals. For this reason, data from the March CPS have traditionally been used to track trends in labor force participation of mothers
