    • At the ICCC Meeting in Toulouse in 1980, the existence of these molecules was brought somewhat cautiously to the attention of Professor Gray, fresh from being the centerpiece of the day's program as a plenary lecturer. Not knowing the individual who had trapped him at the top of the stairway from Mr. J. Doe of the credit card commercials, he nevertheless responded cordially to the approach and was quickly up to speed with that unique mixture of spontaneous enthusiasm, interest and encouragement that is so familiar to all his friends and collaborators. In spite of extensive use of 'simplified molecular orbital schemes' and 'modified Latimer diagrams', however, the photoredox properties of the diiridium system proved unequal to the task of meeting global energy requirements through photocatalytic dihydrogen production from water.
