    • We had submitted part of this paper as an abstract to the First Symposium of Organic Chemistry before April 1, 1997, and the whole paper was presented during the Symposium (Oct.6-10, 1997, Chengdu). After the presention of this paper, a similar but not the same report using the same catalysts appeared. See Sammakia, T., Stangeland, E.T., J. Org. Chem., 62, 6104(1997).

    • Typical procedure for transfer hydrogenation: under an atmosphere of nitrogen, 3 (4.8 mg, 0.005 mmol) and 1 (4.8 mg, 0.01 mmol) were refluxed in 10 mL dry i-PrOH for 30 min. Acetophenone (1.8 g, 15 mmol) in dry i-PrOH was mixed with the complex solution before 5 mg of NaOH in 1 mL of dry i-PrOH was added under refluxing to start the reaction.
