    • A new book of mine, Behavior in Organizations (McGraw-Hill, 1975), with L. W. Porter and J. R. Hackman, extensively considers the role of individual differences in determining behavior in organizations. It is a general text that is written for beginning students and managers.

    • The best summary of the work on job design that is available is a book by Louis Davis and James Taylor, The Design of Jobs (Penguin, 1972). It contains most of the important articles that have been written on job design. Robert Kahn described the work module approach in a recent Psychology Today article (“The Work Module—A Tonic for Lunchpail Lassitude”, 1973, Vol. 6, No. 44).

    • Most of the behavioral research on pay is reviewed in my book Pay and Organizational Effectiveness (McGraw-Hill, 1971). This book considers the relevant theory research and practice and can be read by a manager who has a background in either pay administration or behavioral science. A classic book in this area is W. F. Whyte's Money and Motivation (Harper, 1955). It does a nice job of highlighting how individuals differ in their reactions to pay.

    • Marvin Dunnette's book Personnel Selection and Placement (Wadsworth, 1966) presents a good discussion of the issues involved in dealing with individual differences in the selection process. An article by J. Wanous, “Effects of a Realistic Job Preview on Job Acceptance, Job Attitudes, and Job Survival” (Journal of Applied Pscyhology, Vol. 58, No. 3), provides a good discussion of the use of realistic job previews.

    • A recent book by Victor Vroom and P. Yetton, Leadership and Decision Making (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1973), deals with how and why leadership styles should be varied according to situations. It is research-oriented but can be read by the nonprofessional.
