    • An addition of an arbitrary function of PHI (such as Cr) is allowed to leading order in p-1. The solution Cr, the variation of concentration inside the roll region, represents a weakly damped mode which decays on the diffusive time scale τd. Since this time scale is long, in the realistic experimental situation one may expect this mode to be present (as a transient) and be observable as some structure in the concentration profile periodic from step to step.

    • Negative n terms in the sums in Eq. (A1) were omitted because they correspond to functions with asymptotic behavior asymmetric under χ -> - chi reflection. These are incompatible with the outer expansion, Eq. (11).
