Visual study of hydrogen migration using switchable mirrors
-
den Broeder FJA, van der Molen SJ, Kremers M, Huiberts JN, Nagengast DG, van Gogh ATM, Huisman WH, Koeman NJ, Dam B, Rector JH et al.: Visual study of hydrogen migration using switchable mirrors. Nature 1998, 394:656-658. Elegant optical experiments to investigate the hydrogen transport properties inside thin Y-films have been designed by den Broeder. Small Pd structures, partly covering Y-films, act as catalytic gates of hydrogen gas, through which lateral transport led to fabulous microscopic structures. These structures, each having a typical optical appearance, are correlated to the various distinguished Y-hydride phases. By applying a voltage across the Y films evidence could be obtained that hydrogen in the trihydride phase has a negative valence.

Optical switching based on magnesium lanthanide alloy hydrides
-
Van der Sluis P, Ouwerkerk M, Duine PA: Optical switching based on magnesium lanthanide alloy hydrides. Appl Phys Lett 1997, 70:3356-3358. Alloying rare earth materials is reported to be very helpful in regulating the optical properties of alloy hydride thin films. Mg turned out to be a good alloying candidate, allowing one to control both the film transmission and reflectivity properties. It was shown that the transparent state of GdMg-trihydride could be made colour neutral, which is considered to be an essential property in many electrochromic devices.

Optical transmission spectroscopy of switchable yttrium hydride films
-
Kremers M, Koeman NJ, Griessen R, Notten PHL, Tolboom R, Kelly PJ, Duine P: Optical transmission spectroscopy of switchable yttrium hydride films. Phys Rev B 1998, 57:4943-4949. In situ optical measurements were conducted during the electrochemical (de)hydrogenation. The wavelength resolved electrode transmission has been revealed as a function of the hydrogen content. The dihydride phase was found to be characterised by a small transmission window at high energy wavelengths. The influence of the Pd top layer on the optical film properties has been derived by investigating the optical properties as a function of the Pd layer thickness.
