    • For a quantitative analysis of the elastic only scattering from the TOF data, we proceeded in the following way. A TOF spectrum has been measured with Ei= 23 meV at the exact specular condition (Qpara= 0~ A ang-1) and a surface temperature of 160 K. This TOF spectrum could well be described by a Voigt line shape (FWHM approx 0.5 meV) and has been used to define elastic scattering. All other TOF spectra have been analyzed by placing this Voigt function at zero-energy transfer, keeping its position and halfwidth locked and adding additional functions to other single-phonon peaks and the broad multiphonon background until an accurate description of the entire TOF spectrum could be obtained. The area under the Voigt function is then identified with the elastically scattered component.

    • There, excellent fits to diffraction peak shapes associated with the roughness of secondary steps created by a deliberate misorientation towards the (113) direction have been obtained by using a logarithmically diverging correlation function with the crossover length fixed to the known average secondary interstep separation.
