This argument is simplistic in that resonance effects, while primarily a π molecular orbital phenomenon, also affect σ molecular orbitals, though to a lesser degree. Likewise, inductive effects are not limited to σ molecular Orbitals but also affect π molecular orbitals. These complex interdependencies highlight the difficulties inherent in relying on bond lengths to measure the degree of π-back-bonding present in the isonitrile complexes.
