l. Under such an approach, the boundary condition (3.6) can be applied only at one end site (s=0), the condition being not necessarily satisfied at another end side (s=N) unless a=0. This leads to somewhat different eigen-energies and eigen-states.

Such an approach has been utilized in other areas as well, for instance analysing vibrational modes in the presence of surfaces, H. Puszkarski, Surf. Sci. 34, 125 (1973).

note
-
In this discussion, it is implicitly assumed that L>0, where -L is the energy of the resonant coupling. In such a case, the optically allowed transitions take place to the levels situated at the bottom of the exciton band.

note
-
One-exciton to bi-exciton transitions have been analyzed in detail recently (Refs. 19 and 22), the present paper concentrating on the transitions to the dissociated two-exciton states. Formation of bi-excitons at a > 1 produce an extra peak at the red-side of the pump-probe spectrum.
