    • Early attempts to synthesise rotaxanes by means of a slippage approach were based on the statistical threading of the macrocyclic on to the dumbbell-shaped component. It was hoped that by heating a solution of both components, some of the macrocycle would slip-on over the stoppers of the dumbbell-shaped compound by chance. However, the absence of noncovalent bonding interactions between macrocycle and dumbbell-shaped component within the rotaxane assembly resulted in very low yields: see I.T. Harrison, J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 231 (1972).
