We also mention parenthetically that in optical experiments we have observed very bright photoluminescence (PL) from such sinusoidal (Formula presented) superlattices. This was rather surprising, since modulated structures of this combination of materials are assumed to have a staggered (i.e., “type-II”) band alignment, suggesting that optical transitions in this system should be indirect

S. Lee, F. Peiris, V. Bindley, and J. K. Furdyna, in International Conference on Frontiers in Semiconductor Lasers and Quantum Dot Physics (IAPS Press, La Jolla, CA, 1998). This reference demonstrates that even a small amount of Se tends to very effectively impede the incorporation of Te. Thus, although the rotation of the stage tends to trigger the growth described in this paper, issues such as the element-specific sticking coefficients and the difference in surface diffusion of Se and Te after they make contact with the surface are expected to be important in the process as well.
