Attempts to oxidize the axial alcohol to ketone 19 (excess acetone, THF, 25 °C) or to equilibrate the axial alcohol to equatorial alcohol 20 (1 equiv of acetone, 10 equiv of Me2CHOH, THF, 25 °C) under samarium catalysis were unsuccessful. Since the samarium-catalyzed Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone has been reported to give a 3:1 ratio of axial:equatorial alcohols,22b we believe the axial spiroketal oxygen in our system must be playing a key role in reduction of 19.
