One of the reviewers suggested an alternative view involving the solvent, which is consistent with the kinetic data and would result in the following equilibria: equation presented The coordinative unsaturation of the metal(s) would justify the intervention of noncoordinating solvents which would be only weakly bound and easily removable by the attack of the incoming ligand. However, the neglegible solvent effect (see Table 3) suggests that specific interactions between solvent molecules and the metals, if any, must be scarcely important.
