    • Note that strictly speaking a first order phase transition is a transition with at least one discontinuous derivative of the free energy. According to this definition the condition β=0 is sufficient to call a transition ``first order.'' However, common use of this term entails in addition the existence of latent heat, phase coexistence, and finite correlation length at the transition, which turns out not to be the case in the present context.
