All experimental spectra contain both inelastically and elastically scattered light. The elastically scattered light gives rise to a spectral feature at the excitation energy. This (elastic) peak is subtracted from the inelastic contributions. For this we use a line shape, approximating the monochromator function. An insufficient subtraction procedure may create artificial spectral features right at the Fermi level and we can thus not completely rule out this possibility.
