18. The students were systematically trained in the method of content analysis for this project. After a discussion and demonstration of the coding process, the students were given the same set of ten stories to code individually. The data from these stories were compared and discussed, and the problems detected in the coding process were reviewed. After the training was complete, each student independently coded between 10 and 12 stories a week for 6 weeks. For the purpose of assessing intercoder reliability, about 20 randomly selected stories each week were coded by two coders. This procedure yielded a sample of 15% of all stories from which reliability estimates were made. A spot check of those stories indicates an acceptable level of reliability (coefficients range from k=. 70 to k=1.0 with mean of k=.89)
