The chirality descriptor (IR) is changed into (15), and vice versa, respectively, when going from the monomeric to the polymeric catalyst as a result of the priority rule, Si > C. Consequently, to avoid confusion, the catalysts are preferentially characterized by their sign of optical rotation.

One reviewer suggested the possibility that the polymer bound oxovanadium complex may adopt a different configuration as reported previously (A. Togni, G. Rist, G. Rihs, A. Schweiger, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1993, 775, 1908-1915) for the monomeric complex 5a in the presence of, e.g., imines. A polymer induced epimerization at the vanadium center would lead to a completely different coordination geometry of the catalyst, with aldehyde coordination occurring no longer trans but cis to the oxo ligand. It was proposed to verify a configurational change by EPR spectroscopy.
