    • The anomaly of silicon in plant biology
    • Epstein, E: The anomaly of silicon in plant biology. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1994, 91:11-17. In general, plant physiologists do not consider silicon an essential nutrient for soil-grown plants, although it is a major constituent of soil and is found in plants at macronutrient levels. This review discusses the deposition of silica predominantly in terrestrial plants and its positive effects on mechanical strength and resistance to disease, infestation, and adverse chemicals. It is argued that silicon should be included in experimental plant nutrient formulations.

    • Huo Q, Margolese DI, Stucky GD: Surfactant control of phases in the synthesis of mesoporous silica-based materials. Chem Mater 1996, 8:1147-1160. This paper thoroughly examines how the molecular shapes of covalent organosilanes, quaternary ammonium surfactants, and mixed surfactant arrays, and the use of various reaction conditions result in different silica-based mesostructured materials including MCM-41, MCM-48, MCM-50, SBA-1, SBA-2, and SBA-3. A room-temperature synthesis of the bicontinuous cubic phase, MCM-48, and a low-temperature, low-pH route to a large-pore, well-ordered MCM-41 phase are presented.
