- A measure of the resonance occupation as a function of time is given by the fraction of the wave packet that lies within [formula omitted] a.u. As [formula omitted] is scanned in energy, the maximum value attained by the occupation changes and maps out a Lorentzian profile. For each energy, there is an identical exponential decay of the occupation with a time constant, [formula omitted] that is the reciprocal of the FWHM of the Lorentzian, in agreement with the uncer tainty principle. In a separate calculation, the lifetime of the resonance has been obtained by placing a Gaussian in the well and monitoring its rate of escape. Results using the two methods are in good agreement provided that a sufficiently good wave packet energy resolution is used in the scattering calculation
- To calculate the latter, two complimentary approaches have been employed. For a particular value of Z, a broad electron wave packet with well defined energy [formula omitted] is incident from the bulk onto the surface region
