9. The surface patterning of this paper utilized an etching method where stripes of hydrogen-passivated silicon were created, separated by chromium spacer stripes. Local surface topography and chemistry are both changed in this type of solid substrate patterning. Experimental verification of the checkerboard composition modulations predicted in the thicker films [Fig. 11(a)] is difficult and is avoided in the present study.
