Prior to the inhibition studies of cysteine proteases it was necessary to remove the excess activating thiol (used to activate the cysteine proteases) since Te(IV) compounds interact readily with thiols (see text). This separation of the active protein from the low-molecular weight thiol was carried out by gel filtration chromatography, though we could not ensure complete separation. Thus, small quantities of tree cysteine. below the sensitivity of our DTNB assay, could be present in the protein fractions.
