    • A note on the methodology: a total of 294 European and American managers responded to the survey which was sent to western companies operating in the Asia Pacific region. Of these replies, 285 were valid. The response rate of 26.7% was high for this type of survey. By country, replies were broken down as follows: China 47; Hong Kong 36; India 7; Indonesia 18; Japan 36; Korea 27; Malaysia 18; Philippines 10; Singapore 44; Taiwan 14; Thailand 23; Vietnam 5. India and Vietnam were included for the first time in the 1996 survey. Also noticeable was the sharp increase in responses from China (up from 10 in the 1992 survey), reflecting the surge of activity there in recent years. Most respondents have spent at least five years in the region - the average is 8.5 years - and the vast majority have business experience in at least two Asian countries. The data tend to contradict the common perception that expatriates serve only two or three years in a posting. This suggests our executives have a certain familiarity with the issues and challenges posed by the daily operating environment.
