    • An explanation of this behavior could lie in the incongruent melting of zircon, if one keeps in mind the fact that, on heating, sol-gel derived glasses usually follow the same sequence of phase transitions as do melts of the same composition on cooling. In this view the behavior of gels of mullite composition would be an anomaly, even though a phase separation is postulated to occur before crystallization (see ref 44).
