34. The downward slope in rates beyond 1-2 cP in reactions 1 and 2 and under pressure were regarded at first as incursions into the encounter-controlled regime. However, it was pointed out that this ought to occur only at higher viscosity and suggested instead that the viscous solvents limit the relative freedom of movement of the reactants in the microenvironment of the encounter pair while having no critical influence on the diffusion of the reactants in the bulk solution.
