Although this paper has been published in 1995, it is a epidemiologic report of 179 ARDS patients admitted to ICUs in Seattle a decade ago (from 1983 through 1985). The primary goal of the study was to test clinical risks that would identify most of the patients developing ARDS in their hospital population.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate ARDS outcome using this new ventilatory technique, based on retrospective studies by the same investigators. Although this study is a nonrandomized trial, lend further support to the hypothesis that limitation of peak inspiratory pressure and reduction of lung overdistention may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve outcome in ARDS.
