Note that this metal-like behavior is characteristic not only of SCL but also of a Wigner crystal on a uniform background. Ions of such a crystal slide on the uniform background and adjust their positions to the change of the electrostatic potential of the removed ion via small elastic deformation of the Wigner crystal. This adjusment does not create topological defects, dislocations, or disclinations. Therefore, SCL can react in this way not only at a distance larger than its correlation length, but also at smaller distances where it has a crystalline short-range order. The situation changes when background charge is strongly nonuniform (see the discussion of the role of such disorder in the Conclusion). In this case, effects of pinning can modify screening by the Wigner crystal and even by SCL. We plan to study this question in a future publication
