    • It is difficult to see how this picture could be literally correct, since the sign of the fermion determinants is a highly nonlocal function of the Hubbard-Stratonovich variables associated with all time slices. In addition, the ctheta functions that arise when the absolute value of ρ (x) is taken introduce terms into Z that are nonanalytic in Δ tau. Such singularities could not arise from a true Hamiltonian formulation.
